March 2012 Carribean Cruise?
« on: Saturday 16 July 2011, 09:38 »
I was wondering if anybody knew a bit more about the March 2012 Carribean Cruise on Holland America featuring Albannach, Brother and um, the band who's name I can never remember how to spell.

Is anybody here going? We're looking into booking a cabin, but its going to be a major undertaking and expense for our household, I mean we could practically go to Scotland for the same price.

And while I'm asking, has anybody considered the wisdom of sending a bunch of us fair-skinned people of wind-swept, cloud-covered and down right "soft" Island descent to a sun drenched one? We don't tan you know, we burn... Although the optional excursion to the rum distillery did seem like a grand idea.  :mrgreen

Hello, my husband Dennis and I are going. It'll be our 1st cruise. It sounded like the perfect cruise to take for our maiden voyage! We have been fans of Albannach since the very beginning (even before when some were with CAD). A know several people who have been on this cruise line, and they all said it was excellent and worth every penny. The service is beyond the best. Just lather yourselves up well and often with a HIGH SPF sunblock, and you should be okay. My grandson's name is Skyler, and he is liking to be called Skye @ times, is Skyler your name as well. Take care, and really consider this cruise!......Olga

I've done a HAL cruise on the Statendam to Alaska - where interestingly enough the same tour company is going in June with 3 other Celtic Music bands I've never heard of. My mom wanted to go to Alaska for her "once in a lifetime" trip so I planned it all - 7 day trip on land plus 7 day cruise. Loved Alaska, loved Holland America.

This trip comes at a less then perfect time financially but we're running the numbers and trying to make it work. The cabin rates are good, bit over brochure but thats expected with a themed group tour where you bring the entertainment. Its when you add in the port fees, airfare, optionals, insurance etc where I find myself yelling at the calculator - darn it work with me here! The Caribbean is also a location I didn't have on my travel list - return trips to Scotland, Ireland, the UK, Alaska, and possibly a first trip to Norway were much higher... but there's the additional draw of what we're bringing with us. We too are fans from the CAD days.

Plus the mere fact this has made my hubby want to step on a cruise ship for the first time ever and he said he'd go to the parties in the crows nest (really?   you'll go to a dance party, on a cruise ship, in the caribbean - FAINT) can't really put a price on that  :mrgreen . Well, plus knowing what a HAL cruise ship is like, and what all us Misfits are like I've been giggling nonstop since I first heard about it. I wonder if they'll accept a dress shirt and kilt as proper attire in the dining room on formal night vs the expected dark suit or tux.

Just figured I'd see how many people were going, if anybody knew anything other then the very brief info available on the website, and then try to blugeon the calculator until it says what I want it too.

And no, my name is Gina, I've just been using Skye23 on the internet for eons - reference to the Isle of course. I love visiting it, always the highlight of any trip to Scotland for me.

This will be my 8th cruise!
I've been to the eastern & western carribbean as well as Alaska!
Have never been with Holland America line, but know they are reportedly one of the best!
Always lots of pampering by the cruise staff! Expect to eat too much...drink too much....and gain some weight!
of course you can always dance it off...or use the gym!|
I'm bringing my 2 VERY best friends! They like the band....not quite as much as I do  :8
but they always encourage my crazy endeavors!
Really hoping for enough $$$ to get a private beach cabana w/ butler service on the private island! ....but maybe if we can't afford the butler, some nice man would help us retreive our drinks from the bar while we sun-bathe....!!?? LOL

I've never been on a cruise, but my mom's swears she loves them, even when she's been seasick. I would love to go on the cruise, but it's a little pricey, considering we just started a massive project on the front half-acre of our property.

And the high spf sunscreen does work on our pale skin.  I was in the Dominican Republic years ago and was successful in keeping my skin from burning -- except the top of my head.  That nasty Carribbean sun found its way down through my hair and burned the crap out of my scalp.

This will be our first cruise and I am bringing my mom, grandma, and 10 year old son. I can't take a vacation this summer because of work issues so this was a good substitute. It is pricey and not a destination I would choose except for the entertainment  :D I figure the cost evens out if it is vacation for this year and next. I am happy to get away from the March snow and get some sunshine too.  Sunscreen and hats are a must!
I am assuming that more info will come as it gets closer but I really don't have anything more than what is on the website. I found lots of info on the HAL website and also am wondering about the dress codes.  Could be interesting for some misfits LOL I think we will have a blast!

Assuming I can give the link to another website here.. there's a great website for cruise ship travelers that I used heavily for my Alaska trip and am using again for this one. It won't help with the unique portion of our group trip which is what I was asking about here - but everything else from how to find the best rooms, to what the ship is like, to what to wear, menus etc - that its got.

www.cruisecritic.com

They have reviews of ships, and the message boards are a wealth of info. As we get closer to the cruise I'll try to post some of the random bits of info for those who don't have the time or inclination to wade into the message board.

Like here's a useful bit - once you book your cruise and have your booking number you can go online to the HAL website and look for their Indulgences section. They have lots of stuff you can pay for in advance including Soda cards. These are unlike the other beverage cards you can buy - but they are prepaid cards that cost $25 and are worth $50. If you order them to be delivered AT SEA they will not charge you any tax on them. When used, you'll get roughly 22 sodas for the price of the card (15% gratuity included). If you don't use all of your card they will if asked refund the balance (up to the $25 you paid but not the bonus $25) to your onboard ship account where it can offset your other purchases and tips. They are not good on Half Moon Cay unfortunately, at this time. Perhaps by the time we tour they might be.

One thing to consider - when we go to Half Moon Cay the private island - those of us who've chatted here could rent a Cabana or two and then split the costs between us. According to the C.C. message boards HAL acts like you can only have 4 people in the cabana - but its not entirely true. If you rent the cabana and don't pay an additional person suppliment then the first 4 get the priority tender over and the rest go with everyone else and they just don't bring you more food and beverages then they would if there were just the 4 people they expected. When you consider that you could simply buy more sodas/water at one of the bars, or get free iced tea etc at the dining pavillion - plus everyone in the Cabana will be eating lunch in the Pavillion you don't really need to buy the extra slots.

The Cabanas cost $299 for up to 4 people (theoretical) and come with a fridge, ceiling fan, air conditioning, table with 4 chairs inside and a couple of deck chairs plus a private misting shower on the deck. They serve you a certain number of bottles of water, cans of soda, fresh fruit, veggies & dip, and chips & salsa. You get your booze and regular food from the same places as everyone else. They also provide beach towels, snorkel gear and floating mats.

From my perspective, the main benefit of the Cabana is the chance to get out of the sun if you get overheated. Since we'd probably be in and out of the thing, and many of us would be hitting the bar for our beverages anyway we could probably at least double the number of people using a Cabana with no issues. Then you're talking about $37.50 or so a person. If I remember right you get like 8 sodas included plus some water so that would be a soda each.

Now that would be fun! Although my personal fantasy is that Albannach hog-ties the people who play the steel drums on the island and takes over the island. Just a minor invasion people, nothing to see here - just send your women and your booze to the main stage and nobody will get hurt?  :evilgrin

Minor glitch in our travel plans, my Hubby's only had his new job for a few weeks and somewhere along the way there was a miscommunication or misunderstanding. I knew how much he was making an hour, I knew he got benefits in 3 months and a certain number of holiday's off, what I didn't know was hourly employees (vs salary) of this company don't get any paid vacation at all. Not the national/regular holidays (which he has to work if the clients want him to) and not of his own choosing. The paperwork says he can request time off for vacation - unpaid, within certain guidelines. But its incredibly vague about what those guidelines are and if the company is going to be happy about it.

So not only will he lose 6 days of pay (if we fly in 1 day early as a insurance that we won't miss the boat due to a delayed flight). But he may not even be able to take the time off at all. It pretty much just made the trip cost $800+ more. Ouch... :'(  He's going to talk to HR to see if him taking off 6 days in March will be a problem, then talk to his co-workers to see if they've done it and kept their jobs and then we'll redo the math again and try to figure it out.
I'm leaning towards putting down the deposit, getting the "cancel for any reason" insurance and then I'll start looking under the sofa cushions and car seats for more spare change.

I think the tickets would cost even more if Albannach were to take over the island! LOL

All us Misfits could just stay there when the ship sails  :bounce :bounce :bounce
I wouldn't mind living off the land on Albannach Island!   plenty of fresh fish & seafood!! permanent entertainment!!
what could be better?

I hope you find a way to make this happen for you! I hate it when real life tries to interfere with my fun! :evilmad

Well we found out his taking the time off won't be a problem as long as he gives them frequent, advance notice. I suggested reminding them every single month he was taking that week off.

The money situation I think we can do, my mom's feeling generous and she was already going to help us afford this (celebration gift that hubby found a job perm job with benefits after years of contract work, or worse yet - no work). Well she decided that was a poor reason to not go and that surely somehow in the next 7 months we could figure out something. Its probably going to involve me selling some things I inheirted, I figure the experience and the memories will provide me with more happiness then the possessions do. So I'm supposed to do some last minute financial planning (airfare, insurance, etc etc) and hopefully I'll be booked soon too!

Woot! Just placed my reservation.  :mrgreen

I would like to thank my Mom for not only teaching me that life is short and we should take time out to enjoy it while we can but also for putting her money where her mouth is and helping me make this work financially  LOL

Its still going to require a lot of saving and scrimping and earning of extra money but thanks to her its going to be possible. Nice thing about being an only child (and grandchild) - there's a good chance you're Mommy's favorite!

So... we were talking about the Oasis....  :drunk

Cool - you're going to love cruising. After my last (and first) HAL cruise I remember asking my mother on the last night if we could throw our clothing over the railing and pack our cabin steward instead. She took a very long look over the railing and sighed and then said she'd love to, but she didn't think he'd travel too well in the airplane hold.

It doesn't matter if you get the inside room, or a verandah, or a suite - it will amaze you how your room just seems to magically clean itself. Not that ours was every messy or dirty, but we'd come back and I'd find the stuffed animal I tote around on trips tucked into my bed, all of our travel brochures neatly fanned out on the coffee table, more fresh fruit in our bowl, the flowers I bought my mom watered, ice in our bucket. It was like having a house gnome! And lets not forget the whole chocolate on the pillow every night thing either! You may want to bring a pack of post-its or a memo pad, its useful for leaving a note to the cabin steward in case you need anything. Stuff like a sewing kit, or perhaps - Having a party for fellow Misfits, please have extra ice available tonight after sailaway  :drunk

So glad you will be able to go on the cruise! Thanks for additional info, and it's a great idea for sharing the cost of a cabana with others! Count us in! We are so excited about this cruise, and I was shocked that my husband said yes, even before I could finish giving him all the details!! We just received our confirmation the other day. We are trying to get some other family members to join us, some are considering it seriously. We look forward to meeting all in person, and having a fun cruise. We sendt off for our passports yesterday. I bought a new swim suit on clearance. I hate the thought of packing, I'm not very good at it. I want to bring everything! My daughter told me to stick to 2-3 color combinations, that sounds  boring to me! Have a good week everyone. :D :bounce

I'm booked!! Since June. Prepared to go into debt & hyperventilating over finding the $$. A tip for 1st timers, Holland has a faq section. Its great. It gives answers about boarding, how the charges on board work, even what to do if you have food allergies. Hope this helps.

HAL has a great website. And if you don't find the answer there, the Cruise Critic message boards will definately have the answer. I used them extensively to plan my Alaska cruise with my Mother, and have been brushing up again for this cruise. If you all don't mind, I'd be happy to post tips and random bits of info regarding HAL - things I found useful to know last time around and stuff that first-time cruisers might not know. I see we've got a few of those signed up so far.

Today's topic - Beverages

HAL provides lots of beverages for free at meals, and during any hours when the Lido Buffet is open. These can very according to the meal but they include fruit juices, milk, lemonade, fruit punch, iced tea, coffee and water. At meals you can also get cappucino or espresso with your dessert.

HAL serves Coke products - and you can usually purchase the following either from room service, at the dining room, or in bars - Coke, Diet Coke, Coke Zero, Sprite, Sprite Zero and Fanta Orange. Sometimes there is another option or two as well. If you buy one of the $25 soda cards you will get $50 worth of soda with it (about 22 cans). The unused balance ($25 you paid) can be returned to your onboard account at voyages end to pay for other things.

HAL also offers specialty coffee drinks (think Starbucks) in their Explorations Cafe. The prices are approximately 1/2 Starbucks price, and you get a free pastry or snack with your drink.

Besides the Soda card, you can also get Beverage Cards (all non-alcoholic) and Alcoholic Beverage cards for 10% off ($45 for $50 and $90 for $100). The unused balance will be returned to your onboard account just like the soda card - up to the price you paid but not including the discounted portion.

ALL beverage purchases automatically include a 15% gratuity and you do not need to tip on top of that. You of course can throw down a few more dollars from time to time to reward particularly good service.

Beverage cards typically cannot be used during the Happy Hour or Drink Special hours because you'd be double discounting. However, sometimes they can. It falls under don't count on it working, but try once and see what happens. Complimentary appetizers are served every day, check your schedule to see when.

You are allowed to bring all of the water and soda you want onboard. So if you fly in the day before you can stop before hand and pick up some to bring back on the ship. You can bring a small quantity of wine (check HAL FAQ to see how much), but NO liquor. You can bring limes and cocktail shakers etc though.

Bottles of Booze can be ordered through the Indulgences section on the HAL website and delivered to your room as well.

When ordering wine, booze, soda cards, beverage cards etc - if you specify for them to be delivered to you while AT SEA vs before embarkment you will not be charged Florida sales tax. Most people find that everything they ordered is in their cabin when they arrive anyway, regardless of what they specified.

Yes, Dennis and I still plan to attend. I must admit, I'm not quite as excited about the cruise, but have waited a very long time to go on one. I also have some serious health issues, so yes, I will go while I can still enjoy myself! We have family members who are going on the same cruise (they were not doing the celtic part), so it will still be alot of fun. I just wish someone would come forward, and just give us a straight, simple answer as to why this happened. I belive we all deserve that. I'm not pointing the finger or blame on anyone, just think the fans deserve to know the truth. So, I hope that some people will come, and have a good time on this cruise. Look forward to meeting some new friends in person.

I got a call from the travel agency but no info - went to look on facebook, page missing. Came here - devistated. Some people on facebook are saying there's more info on Brother's page (facebook?). So going to look there. I will probably cancel because the money was more then we should have been spending but we were doing it ONLY to see Albannach. Hubby was so excited, I don't know how I'm going to tell him tonight.
