My first time there. Where to stay? any recommendations? or to avoid?? thoughts?? thanks

There's a great B&B in Sugar Hill called the Homestead - about a 20 minute drive from Loon. Hopefully he'll still be open - if you decide to go this route, tell Paul I sent you (I've stayed there before, and my Mom stays there all the time).

Word to the wise, the reservations usually start filling up around this time. Might want to secure something soon or you may have
to stay outside of the Lincoln area, which tends to to be cheaper if you want to save some $$. The Lincoln/Woodstock folk tend
to price-gouge us for the Highland Games weekend.

try for the lakes region, its only another 45 minutes up 93, tilton, laconia, alton area, theres plenty of places to stay then, and its offseason for them. only issue u may have is if NHHG is on a loudons nascar weekend race (ps nascar sux).

I have stayed at three different places...

Lost River Valley Campground in one of their very simple camping cottages with 2 rooms- one with a desk and full sized bed and other with a bunk bed. They do have electricity and as it can be cold at night you can request a heater...found out they had them as we were checking out after two freezing nights huddled under layers and layers of blankets.

Franconia Notch Motel- much more "civilized" cottages with your own bathroom, fridge, two bedrooms, cable tv and heat. Owners are very friendly and accommodating. My only complaint was the heater was quite loud and would wake us in the night with awful noises, but hey we were warm!!

Indian Head Resort is my favorite of the three. They have shuttles that pick you up and bring you right to Loon. Rooms are pretty decent, nothing fancy and they have all common amenities. Just a fun atmosphere and some great mountain views!!

Loon is a BLAST, be prepared for crowds though!! BTW each of these I mentioned are very close to Loon. Hope this helps!!

comin up to NH huh, thats kewl mary

, theres no camping on the mtn like GFM cuz its a ski area but theres plenty of spots real near it to camp. cabin sounds better though, you'd want it after a long day on the mtn at loon, not as much shade like GFM has.

Make sure you bring WARM WOOLIES!!! The nights are really damp&cold. The days are comfortable to mildly hot but if your going to attend the fri. or sat. night concerts you'll definately NEED warmer clothes. Those cabins have fireplaces or electric heaters if I remember correctly to accomodate the cooler weather. I also live within an hour of Loon Mtn. this will be my 7th yr. If anyone is interrested I had posted a Loon weather,interest&stay list with lots of links in it. Just let me know & I can re~post again with all the latest info. Im always lQQking for an excuse to do a long sunday aftermoon drive...with picnic included ;}

I recall when "the band that shall not be named" played one year at the games, it was so hot people were passing out. So as they say in new england "if ya don't like the weathah wait five minutes, it'll change"

I believe that there are a number of folks from points south who haven't been to NHHG. Is there a thought to have a Meet & Greet?

If so, I would suggest the Piper's Pub (assuming they still have it) on Saturday.

with me...If you can find a place at or near Loon now, you're in luck. A lot of places book up a year ahead of time and many want you to book 3 nights.
Piper's Pub is still there - or it was last year. Let's hope they get the Tennent's beer back again. Sold out 2 years ago

iunno sj, my clan which is frickin off the hook active in the east specifially north east, keeps gettin on me about not havin a kilt or bein a member of the clan yet, i always find some reason to spend my money on some bill or another book lol.
u'd figure after goin to loon for more htan 15 yrs i'dah' got a kilt by now, i dont care what anyone says loon is awesome, sure it gets crowded and space is an issue for venues but its still got some of the best music and athletics and piping/drumming turnouts in the whole damn nation.
if they had more acreage and onsite camping, they'd give GFM a run for its money, but GFM is an anomoly, like a politican that tells the truth all the time.

5 days till the legion of Nach reconvenes at Lincoln, NH. if u havent' seen the nach at loon u haven't seen em, its a new flavor at loon fo sho.

plus theres beer tents every time u turn around and if u get lost just ask for directions, theres a tap within eyesight where ever you may be on the mtn.

There was a nasty rumour going around at the end of the day the the band has "not yet" been invited back. This prompted me to start "Bring Back Nach!" chants at various points during the last set. I have also written a rather impassioned not to the organizers at NHSCOT.ORG and urge those who go or think about going to these games to do the same!

That being said. It was a fun weekend over all (though it's too bad one person has to ruin everyone else's fun) oh and Ashley...... You are still a traitor and dead to us for betraying the band by wear that other band's shirt and spending time cavorting around the mountain top with the enemy

yeah enough small changes lately to the loon music schedule and the frequency at which the artists play are somewhate troubling. a grassroots campaign to make sure they invite the artists back we like and play more often is required imho.

i mean the organizers, i think, are underestimating how many ppl actually primarilly show up for the music as the major draw for the games, i'd still go for the highland clan and the massed pipe and drums but still. i spend 50% of my time at the games either at the music venues and beer tents the rest at the clan tent for MacLachlan.
i think the problem is that i dont think many of the organizers as much a fan of the modern celtic or tribal rock and therefore devalue the prominance at which the bands bring in revenue at the games which is a critical failure in logic. there r tons of young ppl that show up just for the music and dance and athletics, they should promote and enhance these aspects of loon to be even more successful imho.

Well said Pat, totally in agreement. They have to realize that Albannach and the other performers bring alot of people into the games that would not normally be there. I have friends I have introduced to the band and they come to see them alone. Like you I'm there for both, (Clan and games) but the music keeps me hanging around all day when I would cut out early for the ride home.

So guess we all need to get writing to NHHG and make sure they get it!!

hi, I just thought I’d say as a person of Scottish heritage and a frequenter of many highland games that I love loon and have been coming for 15 yrs. straight. although I have notice the past few years some troubling things and hope they may be remedied. the parking lot attendants this year were woefully out of touch, some didn’t have radios and were texting each other trying to keep up with the direction at which they were sending the influx of cars to park in certain areas. I myself on Saturday was driven in a complete circle twice because the car parking attendants weren’t in communication with each other, twice I had driven off of the main street to D parking lot and then directed back out to the street only to be told to turn right onto main street again and be directed to D parking lot, on the 3rd attempt I heard a rumor that they were parking ppl at the hobo lot so I drove over there unprompted by a parking lot attendant. and the 2 bartenders that were over by the athletics events lodge on the 3rd floor, on friday night were extremely rude, I asked them if they were still open and they didn’t’ even say anything, they just both shook there heads with a scowl on there face and as I turned to walk back down the stairs, they shut off the lights to the whole floor. extremely rude imho. also on a minor note, one of the yellow buses a woman was driving on the hobo route parking lot had a safety hand rail that had a metal bur on the handle that was cutting ppl’s hands deeply enough as they exited the bus, I myself got a fine razor cut on my right hand as did the 2 ppl in front of me. unfortunately I didn’t get the bus number but a lady in her mid 50’s with dirty blonde hair was driving the bus which as I said was a yellow bus, and she did seem to know a great deal about the train car restoration project as she mentioned it as she drove past them into the hobo parking lot (if those details help you narrow down which bus this may be). that safety rail should be replaced or repaired sufficiently so the metal bur is ground down to avoid further minor cuts to ppl as they exit the bus. yeah enough small changes lately to the loon music schedule and the frequency at which the artists play are somewhat troubling. a grassroots campaign to make sure they invite the artists back we like and play more often is required imho. chiefly ALBANNACH!!!... , RATHKELTAIR, THE TOWN PANTS, HADRIAN'S WALL(NEIL EMBERG , ASHLEY MACLEOD, BARLEY JUICE, ENTER THE HAGGIS.

i think the problem is that i don't think many of the organizers are as much a fan of the modern Celtic or tribal rock and therefore devalue the prominence at which the bands bring in revenue at the games which is a critical failure in logic. there r tons of young ppl that show up just for the music and dance and athletics, they should promote and enhance these aspects of loon to be even more successful imho. my final impression of the music changes is they are making the music artists play less at the beer tents and octagon so they can encourage more ppl to buy the 20 dollar friday and saturday concerts which bring in additional revenue. and I mean the over 70 dollars I spent to go the 3 days of the games makes me take pause, I mean If I’m spending that much to enter the games, I expect, nae, demand a chock full schedule of epic music on a full bill. next year in closing I hope to see 1) radios in the hands of the parking lot attendants, 2) all my favorite bands back, (chiefly ALBANNACH!!!... , RATHKELTAIR, THE TOWN PANTS, HADRIAN'S WALL(NEIL EMBERG , ASHLEY MACLEOD, BARLEY JUICE, ENTER THE HAGGIS.) 3) schedule the bands to play more often, I mean ALBANNACH was only scheduled to play once on sunday, the past u could catch atleast 2 or 3 performances, whether they were in the beer tent mini stage or the concert tent or octagon lodge made no matter to me. you guys should really beef up the music celtic rock component more for the 2012 loon games, I don’t think you really understand how many people just come up for the celtic rock or tribal celtic fusion music. it is a driving force to many people that are interested in scottish events such as yours. give the people what they want plz

O PATNH I TOTALLY AGREE!!! Bravo well written. I also had the same probs. with the bus/parking situation & the security rudeness at saturday night concerts. Last year all of their help was fired just before the games so I could mebe understand it last year but NOT this year. It WAS totally unacceptable!!! Im definately on my way to leave them a nice
