Topic: Funny things our kids do!

I know all our kids can do some pretty funny things.

Some of them are even more silly than the movie, Men who stare at goats. Now I'm not knocking that movie, just the title.
I am thinking I could make a movie about the boy who herds cats.

My son is 12 an has just spent the last five minutes herding our 3 cats from one room to another. I have to say this is the funniest thing I have seen in a long while. Now most children, this wouldn't be so hard, or funny, but add Autism into the mix. I wish I had the video going.

But, maybe just a picture of my son's fun side will give you the idea.

Thanks, he is a card. We home school. He was doing research for a report and came in to tell me important info. (" Mom, don't you know? They have done a study. it is very good for us kids with Autism to play with lego's. it is therapeutic.) Then he goes on to tell me all about the new set he wants. Where does this kid get this ability to finagle?  I told him I didn't think that toy counted as it is a Mega Bloks. He then began to jump on one foot. I asked him what was wrong. ("Your pullin my leg and it hurts") 

And the Spec Ed teacher had the nerve to tell me my son has no sense of humor. I think that teacher just wasn't funny.

That must go with having no empathy or compassion. This teacher is why we home school now.

How cute!  Does his autism have the characteristic of him taking things literally?  I recently read a book where the main chararcter had Asperger's, which I'm sure you know, is a form of autism.  Anyway, the character had an inability to comprehend figures of speech and took everything said to him literally.

The majority of public schools (not all) I've dealt with over the past 11yrs seem to be great for the "average" student, but if you have a child with special needs or a gifted child (or both) you have to fight/monitor/push/cajole for everything it seems;  even if their own handbooks/programs/procedures (which you have to ask for) cleary state your child is entitled.  I've told several school authorites that the "No Child Left Behind" program should have been named "The Road to Medocrity"!

I can't tell you the number of IEP meetings I've sat through and felt like I had to be a licensed attorney!  I suppose that's where the term advocate comes into play, but it pushes you beyond frustration.  I feel your pain and I can't praise you enough for having the internal ability to home school

Some children with Autism do, others don't. My son knows is pretty good with it as we have worked hard with that one. He really has writing issues and while he is in 6th grade, he has the writing abilities of a pre schooler. He gets over stimulated easy, and needs down time. Just 30 min of my grandson being here will over do it. He has very limited focus. If it isn't dino's or lego, he isn't interested. We have to push hard on somethings. It is funny in a way, we thought he would never talk, at 4 and 1/2 he just asked for the dino and hasn't stopped since. He can be a little over whelming with the in your space thing, but will take a break if you let him know " personal time now"
He's a good kid, very smart, but never looks to cross the parking lot or street. Scares me to death. I still have to grab him out of the way of cars. One of these days I am going to smack these idiots that drive so fast in a parking lot. That is if I can get up after being run over.
There is a saying " if you have seen one kid with Autism, you have seen only one kid."

I am with you on this subject. The elementary school he was in was pretty good. I went a few rounds with the Principal. She had her budget to stick too. I had my son's future to fight for. The Spec. Ed Teacher there was awesome. I miss her very much.
There is a therapy called the brush therapy that the OT recommended when he was in 1st grade to help calm him. I started it at home and it worked wonders. He would sit and pay attention for up to 20 mins. I requested they train an aide to do this. Here came the battle. I told the Principal if I can prove it helps, will you do this. So I went to the school every 90 mins to do this therapy. The teachers were so amazed at the improvement, they told the Principal and I got what I wanted. After that it was much easier to get the things he needed. Going to the middle school was a nightmare. We were already home schooling for most of the day, just to the spec. ed room two times a week. That middle school got me so mad, I almost got an attny and sued them. My husband says, they just didn't know they were dealing with a pit-bull that won't give an inch. I did get them set straight, I have even been able to write what is called a personal education plan. Like an IEP, only since we home school, it is called a PEP. This way they can't force him back into the reg. school for not passing the state testing each year. Like he passed it while in the reg. school.

It is simply the Lord's blessing that gets me through each day. Some days better than others.
The final straw with the public school was when my daughter was threatened. I think that Middle school staff thought my head could spin around.

Sat down to play chess w my 9yrold, and started off the game w "Let's see if you've been listening, my young Padewan."  Apparently he's be doing more than that bc he spanked me in five moves!  And then said, "It had to happen eventually, my Master."    Cheeky Monkey!

OUCH!   I've been playing quite a bit of chess with my son lately and he's getting pretty good.  I'm not bad myself but I have a problem with the whole strategy thing.

Yea, we enjoy it too.  He's been playing since about 3 or 4 and my 5yrold plays as well.  My 9yrolds the strategist though.  He devoured the Art of War, and loves the battle scenes/strategies of the LOTR books/movies, etc.  He's also been stomping poor souls on WoW for years now although I don't allow him to chat.

We had similar issues with our 17 year old who has Asperger's.  We actually had a teacher to ignore her IEP plan and said "there was nothing wrong with her, she was just stubborn".  That teacher ended up being fired before the year was out but it is amazing to me how many supposedly intelligent educators will ignore an evaluation from a doctor and an IEP that has also been reviewed and set by a panel of teachers and counselors. We got tired of dealing with them and she was home schooled for 4 years before she elected to go back for her Junior and Senior years. 

Now my 15 year old is the clown of the family.  We were grocery shopping and I hear "Hey, mama...Ima fruit fly"!  I turn around and see this....

I'm sorry to hear about the problems that you had to deal with in the school systems. I guess I've been lucky. My son has Spinal Muscular Atrophy and is confined to a power wheel chair. He has movement in his legs and can move his arms. He's able to write, type and feed himself. I have to help him cut his food thought because he gets tired and is not strong enough at times. SMA is a little like muscular dystrophy. He's is really bright and is in the gifted programs at school. I get up twice a night to move him because he's unable to roll himself over and wakes up. He is always happy and never knows a stranger. So far the school he is in has been very helpful, but I do go in alot and volunteer. Also I used to be an aide so that probably helps me a bit. I worked alot with kids with varying types of autism. My nephew has autism and won't talk but we taught him how to sign.

You are a wonderful mother and I am sure Aunt also. You go girl. Keep being the advocate for your son. Yes, being involved helps, but only as far as those in the school are willing to let you. I hope you never have to deal with a uncaring educator. Some time we are our kids only advocate. Stay strong.

This wasn't funny at the time but I guess I have to laugh now. I heard my 2 kids fighting while I was in the kitchen making lunch. My mom said this was normal that all siblings fight. Anyway my daughter, who thinks she is the boss and is 18 months older, started screaming. When I went in the living room I see my daughter in the recliner and my son, whose face is red, trying to push the recliner over with his 318 lb wheelchair. I don't know what she did/said to make him that mad, couldn't get it out of them. He is a really sweet kid and hasn't tried anything like that since, thank goodness. He was about 3 1/2 and she was about 5. They are now 11 and 9.

My daughter is 23 months older than my son. She has always been the first to defend him, but she also thinks she can boss him around. Now that he is 12, he is starting to become a young man and we keep warning our daughter that one of these days, he is going to be bigger than you. On the way to the store about 2 months ago, they were play fighting in the back seat. She did something to get his goat, next thing we hear is " I'm sorry, go ahead, hit me back." So he did, only he missed her arm and hit her in the face. We had to have the talk about how it is not ok to hit girls now matter what. Our daughter jumped in to defend him and stated that she told him to hit her arm, he just has bad aim. That was the last time she started the play slap game. After our long talk about hitting, my husband and I had to laugh. She did too. The only one not laughing was our son who looked very pleased with himself.
I dread thinking about when they start dating. Not sure who is going to stop who from dating.
I know I didn't get many dates in HS as I had an older brother that was 6'3 and full of muscles on the football team. Not many guys were brave enough to face the whole football team. Sometimes older brothers suck. Other times they are nice to have around.

I love hearing these stories!  It makes me feel like our family is quite normal after all   I remember hearing my two munchkins whispering and trying to be all covert about something so of course I go check.  I see the older one trying to coerce the younger one, then about 3, into getting into the empty laundry basket and "sledding" down the carpeted stairs.  They thought Mom was super mean for confiscating the laundry basket and putting that gates back up.  But the younger one always idolized her older sister and of course her older sister was missing that "social link" that kind of keeps most of us in check, so that made for some interesting times!  Oh, and did you realize that it is possible to bite chunks out of a flat wall? Yeah, that got us kicked out of like 3 day care centers.  I thank my lucky stars we've managed to get to 17 and 15!

While visiting his grandma in Calif was upset that he couldn't have any cookies and he didn't want what was for dinner. So he told her "California does not have the ingredients that kids like." This was at the age of 6. If only I had written all these statements down.
Tonight hubby and kids went to the store and I had some quite time. One the way out the door I remember we needed more Saltines. So both kids said" just think Albannach" as it wasn't on the list. ROTFL

, no but it wouldn't have shocked. I stayed home and sent everyone else this time. Hip is pretty sore today so I am trying to rest it. Husband did so well, even got some other things I forgot. What a guy!

Mum & I picked up the boys fm school today, and big H (9) starts to sing "Jingle bells, Batman smells...." So I told him that I sang that same version when I was his age (you know, last millenia ).  Lil H (5) pipes in with "Jingle Bells, Hunter smells, Gramma laid an egg, the Mum-mobile lost a wheel and Hayden got away-eh!"

ROTFL ! That is so funny, I wish I had written down all the things over the years. I could have made it into a book.

Then they move out, then you let them move back in. What could I have been thinking. A 3 year old in the house, ( as I hit the floor exhausted)
