i just read in a genealogical article that if your name that had the form of mac mc or o omitted from it somewhere along the line that u more than likely were more of a distant relation the direct line of the individual clan chieftains, but at a certain point the lines of blood and being able to trace them become almost impossible to validate.  but now with the dna project which started off at homecoming 2009 thats sure to offer some interesting insites into the genome of the sitting chiefs families and the other members of each clans society.


i tend to think regardless if u can relate ur line through the blood, its just like big D always said, a thousand generations youve been from scotland.  and to me that makes not a bit of difference if ur part one branch of scottish family or another, ur still just from scottish blood, and that all has the same spirit imho.

It may only be 64/100 of Scotts blood in there, but it makes you proud to know its there.

i like that thing the native american/scottish american group "blessed blend" said about scottish and native american mairrages that produced children which they called a blessed blend, i think its so kewl that 2 cultures literally continents apart had so much in common with one another (and an equal hatred for the english :P).

Blessed Blend was a interesting group. Very Mellow. But what if you have scottish and english ancestors ? Its not like it can be helped.

I think the only things I'm missing is Italian and Native American.

I've always been very interested in my family's history and genealogy. On my dad's side I have ancestors that crossed with William Penn in 1682. Don't even want to start counting how many generations that is back! . It's harder on my mom's side, as she was adopted. But I do know her biological parents, so I was able to get some info to start with.

11 generations for me i've traced on the MacLachlans, i bet i could get back farther but i haven't been that motivated lately, i gotta do more research on how to find the names of ships ppl came over on, so far i know they were in southern NH as early as 1647 but thats about it.

Ships registry are available, if you have even the vaugest idea what port and year they may have come through.  Somewhere on my old beast at home, I have a link to some of the transcribed registries.  I'll see if I can find it and post it for you.

My G. Grandpa traced the Scottish part of the family to Skye in the late 1500s.  Beyond that things get dicey in records and whatnot...since a lot was verbal and what was written would have been lost if a church burnt down or something.  Doesn't help that my direct ancestor's name was John MacLean.  There's been about as many of them as there are John Smiths. :P

The English side has been traced, but I don't have it all committed to memory at this point.  Directly and easily my dad's dad goes back to the 1500s here in America....my maiden name is an old name in South Carolina.  Very old.  And my G. Grandma's side (half scottish, half english) is the part I'm less informed on, also fairly well known in S.C.

I have to find time to scan all the old written and typed files into digital, before they're lost and illegible.

Im so jealous that most of you can go back so far. Its so time consuming. I can go back to the 1700s my great great etc. grandfather was John Witherspoon from Scotland. After that Im not real sure. Ive done some research on the other branches of my family but not that far. Can anybody recommend some good websites?

I wish I could recommend somewhere for you to look.    My G. Grandpa did all the work, by hand, via mail and telephone.  No such thing as the web in the 60s and 70s.  I'm always amazed at all the work he accomplished just by sending written mail to people he knew, who passed on the letters to people they knew, who replied to him directly and indirectly.  He died when I was quite young, so I remember little of him, but he and my dad were very close.

All I can say is the info is out there....don't give up.  If Great Grandpa could do it with written letters, I'm sure you can find what you need with all the net at your disposal.
