What does this tattoo mean?
« on: Friday 6 August 2010, 16:14 »
I'm hoping someone can help me.  What do these tattoos mean?  Which member of the band has them?  I see from the website that it's on someone's finger.
Thank you for any information you can give me!!

I think this is from the ogham alphabet.  It is an ancient form of writing.

I think that's right.

Not sure who it belongs to but want to think Aya has it.

If it is, you can look at a chart of the alphabet and see what it means.

I second Lissa's reply. :)  Ogham yes, and specifically used to write ancient Irish or Pictish language.  I have a set of cards and a book somewhere called the Celtic Tree Alphabet.  Each set of lines corresponds to a letter/sound, and each one also stands for a specific tree; birch, oak, ash, etc.

As for what it means...I have no idea since I haven't studied it beyond the basics of what it is and the trees.  I suppose you'll have to ask Aya, I agree that the tats are probably his. :)  He has several Pictish tattoos.

Hi Becky,

I responded to your private message as well, but thought it might be useful to post it here too - in case anyone else is interested.

Aya has some Ogham tattoos.  They are writings in the ancient medieval language of 'Ogham' - I can't say I fully understand it, but here's a few links that should help you out.

Note that as far as I know it's NOT just a case of translating each symbol and sticking the letters together - each symbol has a meaning and you need to work out what that is - in the context of the other symbols, to fully understand the message.

Do some googling on Ogham and you'll find a lot more info that what's on wiki.

Hope this helps.

Cheers,
Chris @ Albannach.

LOL!

I have an Ogham necklace I LOVE, it's just a bar with markings that say "beloved" in Pictish. :)
