Badger,

No, this wasn't a no political statement about the inaccuracies. Nor was it about Mel Gibson even though that is who the majority of the public think of or the movie when they hear of William Walace. I just truly loved the track on the CD and wanted to do some thing with it since the Eye of the storm was in large part about Walace and the Bruce. And it is about the only video on youtube with Albannach's The Up Raising and I used Braveheart to draw the viewers... LOL I guess that is a bit of a sell out  :roll  But had a lot of great comments on it with over 6500 views,

TartanThistle01 :

Absolutely loved it, by the time it ended tears were running. Music and also the voice. on the video was amazing!!
What more can i say except
Thank you xxxxxx

jaypo63 :

wow put a shiver down my spine, made me all patriotic

shrinkpachyderm :

its made me cry and albannach are the new breed of the scots. keeping the land alive

foxyfllady :

My granddaughter and I went to the Scottish Highland Games in Winter Springs Fl and heard Albannach for the very first time. We were blown away by their music. Bought there album got them to autograph it, and ordered books on William Wallace. Have seen Braveheart, brought many tears to my eyes. This song and video, brings it all back again, that someone had the guts to stand up and be counted for what he believed

Morganlefay1976 :

I have been a fan of Albannach for a few years now, and to use thier music to Braveheart is in a one word AMAZING! Very well done, you could not have picked a better song

Believe me I'm not try to toot my own horn, Far cry from it! I'm new here to the site and have started to have a whole new out look after reading a lot of posts and see there are some really great fans and people on here. And hope to fit in some where a long the line.

Thank you for posting my video Badger! Take care!!!

The Uprising has always given me the shivers and it has brought tears to my eyes a few times. I'm not sure how I feel about it being put together with the movie, because to me the movie has always been about Mel Gibson.

I knew about Wallace (from my history buff ex-husband who is English would you believe it? But he idolized Wallace) and I was aware of the inacuracies. I do have to tell you that you did a great job and that it was touching and enjoyable, nonetheless.

Maybe you can do one to Ted Christopher's "Where's the River Mel?" That one always brings a smile to my face.

Hello Morven,

I can totally respect what you said and like I said I did sorta sell out to get views. My older brother is a history buff and told me at the time of the movie that it's not historically right. But as for myself didn't do much research on it till after I'd made the video. I can also see the I'll learn a lot more on here too! I'll have to see if I can find Where's the river Mel... LOL I'll get back to you on that one  :?  Anyway's thanks for your honesty!  :)  Take care!

Here's a link to Ted's site. The song is on the "Follow the Wild Geese Home" CD. Look around the site, too, he has some really nice video clips.

Well, I'm going to sound like a real Scottish History idiot here, and that would be because I am.  I read these disgruntals here about the movie Brave Heart being not right for this because it was inaccurate, and all about Mel Gibson.  Well, personally, I did not even know who William Wallace was when I watched Brave Heart the first time.  No, I don't know much about Scotland still, and really knew NOTHING then.

So, my comment is, for dummies like me, the movie made me aware of who he is and what he did.  My question is:   Did Mel Gibson portray WW well?   Even with the inaccuracies, was the story of WW presented with any amount of truth, or did Mel Gibson totally smash the name of WW and offend everyone by his presentation of who he was and what he stood for?????

My final comment is that I liked the movie.  Inaccuracies and all.  And I thought Mel Gibson did a good job acting in it as he always does.  I like Mel Gibson.

So, someone please tell me what the problem is here.   I am totally open to hear the complaints, as it must be wayyyyyyyy off the mark for so many people to complain like this.

I liked the video by the way.  I thought you did a good job on it.

Hello Cindy,

I would like to thank you for you thread today about the video I made!!! I made it a few months ago and as the maker you can see if or where your videos have been linked.... I seen that it had been linked here and that is what brought me to the site. I emailed Badger and thanked him for posting it and he e-mailed me back and thanked me for doing something with the song......

Where I signed up there was only on comment about it and it as you can see was not favorable...... So it's all about "Mel Gibson".... no statements of it's untruths...... Being new here I commented back and not wanting to piss people off I just commented about the comments I'd had on it........ Well that just brought more about "Mel Gibson" and The untruths as far as history.... she was nice don't get me wrong...... But as the owner of the video on youtube I was going to pull the video from the site this morning as I can with any of my videos that are linked some where..... till I ready your post and what you had to say... It's true most if not about 99 percent of people never heard the name William Wallace or Robert the Bruce till the movie Braveheart... I'm a hick from a town of 12,000 in the boonies of eastern Colorado...  I'm not a history buff nor had I heard of Wallace till the movie. I just love the tune The Upraising and wanted to make a video with it. I can say this that bands like Albannach, Brother...etc etc can thank the movie for helping bring out 1000's of fans to these highland Fests.... in this country anyway... And my guess is that most of the members here either liked or loved the movie and how many knew of Wallace before it.... Mel Gibson player William Wallace and did a damn good job of it!!  Jim Carviezel played Christ in Passion of the Christ.. was that movie about Jim, Mel or Christ??? Jammie Fox Played Ray Charles.... Was that about Jammie or Ray because I know it wasn't all true... Joaquin Phoenix played Johnny Cash was that movie all the truth. NO! And I know that Albannach meant The Upraising to be about Wallace because they said so on stage in Estes Park... Now then there are some facts in the tune that were wrong then because there were no muskets that far back in history and it says in the tune to "Load Your Muskets"..... But I still love the song... But what the hell life goes on. No we're not all from the old country or history buffs!!!

Cindy, I'd like to thank you for having the nerve and the guts for... As Mel said "Our God Given Right" to post what you did and I didn't!!! Now that I'm done with my rant and pry pissed some off I'll go on to have a good day and I hope you do too....

I hope you all have a great weekend and a wonderful Easter Sunday!

Cindy bug!  Hey girl!

David Ross is the man you need to talk to, the historian himself.  From what I understand most of the movie was fictional.  The guy that wrote the screenplay actually comes from the town I live in, and there was all sorts of debates about the movie when it first came out.  The history channel did a series something like, the true story behind the movie.  They also said most of Braveheart was fictional.  Facts, he did win the battle of Stirling Bridge and beat the English.  He did die a traitors death in London.  The prince was gay, but died by the hands of his wifes boyfriend (hot poker up the bum)!  There maybe more, but I'm no historian either.

My opinion, for what it's worth.  Great Movie, love Mel, great song.  If you put it all together and it makes more people aware of Scotland and her history then it's a good thing.

Looking forward to seeing you in May!

Everyone has that right and that is what makes this site so great and I welcome what you said.... no can of worms were opened.. I just didn't have the nerve to reply as Cindy did and I wanted to thank her!!!

Good came of it because you introduced me to new music that I really enjoy and have saved to my favorites....  :!thank you!! No harm done and I'll leave the video... I'm very glad that you and others like it.... I'm not going anywhere, I love the site and there are some fantastic fans here including yourself!!

I don't know about the movie or Mel Gibson but the case is closed as far as the video goes to me and people are welcome as they know to comment on Badgers post.

"BraveHeart" was a movie. Made for entertainment.
To me, that it in a nutshell.

This is how dumb I was about the Scottish history.
A friend of mine LOVES the movie "Braveheart", I'd never heard of it.
It came on TV one time so I decide to watch since my friend was so lov'n it.
When it came to the part where William was to be tortured to the point of death I kept saying
out loud~"His friends will save him." "They are going to shoot the rope now." "They are going
to come get him."  :shh
When it FINALLY dawned on me that there was to be no rescue I RAN from the room in tears and
have never watched that movie since.
It did peak my interest about the man William Wallace and then when I saw this band from Scotland
for the first time it really made me wonder what it was all about.
I'm still not very knowledgeable on Scottish history nor am about American history, for that matter but
I find what any person has to share very interesting on both subjects.

Sorry I didn't get to see the artistic video before you felt compelled to take it off. I'm sure I would have
found it as enjoyable as what others have done using the music/video medium.

Hollywood butchers the cultures of indigenous peoples worldwide.

The most humorous thing about "Braveheart" was the color of the woad that they used.  Real woad is very dark, almost a navy blue when applied, but can get a bit lighter if diluted.  Regardless, blue zinc cream was used in "Braveheart" for the purposes of durability and easy removal.  I like to call it "Hollywoad!"

Whether woad was still used as body paint during Wallace's time is unknown (most historians don't think so), but the use of kilts definitely was not.  A padded saffron dyed tunic was employed for armor, but also saffron has antimicrobial properties.  Scots recognized this, and employed the dye in their tunics as a first aid dressing.

I still like dahoser's video, and rather than finding fault with it, give props for him taking the time to make it.

Of course, if the offended purists want to step up and post some historically accurate material on Youtube, I would really appreciate their endeavors!

The main problem us Scots had with the movie was that Wallace (known to be well over 6' tall) was played by an Australian dwarf  :p  There were a lot of inaccuracies but that's Hollywood for you, never let accuracy stand in the way of ruining a good story!  But as others have pointed out, it spread the story of Wallace wider and to a new generation, most of whom have rarely read a history book...  So it had its good aspects.  I can't stand it myself and have only ever seen it twice, the second time under duress on the bus back from London in 2005 having taken part in the 700th anniversary commemoration.

bratach dubh,

It's your attitude as to why I'm really getting turned off on highland games.  While highland games in Scotland may be different than in America, the Yanks of scots descent have festivals that have evolved in their own way.  Your beliefs are similar to that of native peoples here: no nonnative can say ANYTHING about the native culture without having to be raked over the coals.  Likewise, some native peoples here will not attend powwows off the reservation because they are not considered "traditional" enough.  Often outside observations are important perspective to consider.  Learning can come from such discussions, but simply condemning a person for trying to do something out of genuine respect makes enemies, not allies.  Still, you are welcome to your opinion, and I appreciate your perspective.

Americans with Scottish heritage are just that: teach them the real history, but be aware that we are not Scottish, but are proud of our heritage and may express it in ways that you do not approve.  When inaccuracies arise, address them, but don't turn off your friends.

Yes, historical accuracy is important, so let the Scots make a better film.  Get on it and invite me to the screenining, I look forward to seeing it.

Alrighty then.  I see the good and the bad here.   Thanks all for the discussions.

bratch dubh, I have only seen it once.  That was enough for me.  At least now when I hear the name WW I know he was a brave man, and had a Brave Heart.  I see why you guys hold him in such high regard.

Terri, I agree.  Everyone is intitled to thier opinion and I recon that is what makes it all keep going around.

hollyweird never claimed to be a subsidiary of the history channel.

plus mel gibson got more bats in his belfree lately so dont expect too much from him.

the movies ok for what it was, very historically inacurrate, rebel martyrdom, which most ppl found to be worth renting.

i kinda wish they did as good a job on william wallaces story on the big screen as they did rob roy or michael collins movies.

i wish they'd do a good big budget film thats historically accurate about the highland clearances or the battle of culloden the lead up and aftermath to it.

Sorry, I can't see where I criticised highland games, festivals or "native culture" anywhere in my comment - I merely commented on Hollywood's habit of rewriting history to fit an imagined story as opposed to reality, which would have made just as interesting a film.

I'm sure that many Scots film-makers would love to tackle the subject.  Unfortunately the "British" film industry isn't interested, and getting the finances together to do something on this scale would probably be difficult.  I don't know.  I don't make films for a living.  If I did I would expect you to pay to see the movie, however.  Giving free tickets to people would probably mean bankruptcy - it's not a good business practice!   ;)

The subject of Braveheart has always been a bit touchy on here and there’s a real love it or hate it divide; there’s no middle ground with this one.

I come down firmly on the hate it side but not purely for historical accuracy reasons. My dislike of the film stems from the fact that people actually believe it and have formed their views based on what they watched in a movie. I suppose that it’s the people I should dislike rather than the movie.   :s

I accept that some people who had never picked up a history book in their lives, as Nick said earlier, saw this film and went on to learn more about history and this is a good thing but I do know others who came out of the movie theatres yelling “FREEDOM” and harbouring a newborn hatred of all things English. I find this particularly sad and somewhat disturbing.

As for the historical accuracy of the piece, that’s moviemaking for you. Good old Anti-Semitic Mad Max has gone on to do it again in The Patriot and Apocalypto but his films are not alone in the field of Hollywood historical revisionism, there’s plenty more to choose from -

300
10,000 B.C.
Gladiator
Elizabeth: The Golden Age
Memoirs of a Geisha
The Last Samurai

Etcetera, etcetera, ..............ad infinitum.

James.

Forget Hollywood for historical inaccuracy, look at Shakespeare's "McBeth."

The historical MacBeth was a very smart leader.  He made a pilgrimage to Rome to enlist support for Scotland, allied with Earl Thorfinn of the Orkneys, allowed Normans to settle in southern Scotland to repel English advances, and gave property rights to women.  Essentially, he was a Celtic High King.

I agree that the antianglic attitude that erupted from the movie was silly (I was one of those angry 20 somethings that embraced it back then), but many movies of the time used role reversal to revise history as entertainment.  Dances with Wolves was a great film, but it pitted the "good" Lakota against the "bad" white people, no real character development at all.
Fortunately, the interest that these films spawned here in the states allowed a good number of realistic publications to come into the hands of those curious.

I am no purist, nor am I offended, but simply stating an opinion which you seem to share so very freely, whether we want to hear them or not.  Not everything needs to be an argument.
Are you that bored that you feel the need to turn every subject into one of  provocation?

While you seem knowledgeable on many a subject, others' opinions are not rendered invalid by yours.

And for historical accuracy, I give you:

Yes, I have strong opinions, and the majority of them are backed by facts.  I tend to be blunt and direct, and if that bothers some people, then they probably annoy me!

If you don't like my comments, don't read them.  You have the privilege of not talking to me at Nach gigs as well.  The opinions of others are not invalid, but I may or may not agree with them.  I go to see Nach gigs, not try to fit in with a clique of people called misfits.  Take me or leave me, just don't ever lie about me behind my back or play backstabbing gossip games (not saying you do this).

Von Daniken, yes, he has a lot of interesting perspectives.  I've read his work in the past, and it is perfect for conspiracy theory based hollywood films.

Are you that bored that you feel the need to turn every subject into one of  provocation?

While you seem knowledgeable on many a subject, others' opinions are not rendered invalid by yours.

And for historical accuracy, I give you:

Siyje,
Here is the best comment from the video you call "historical accuracy"!!

I don't know you this jumped from William Wallace to Aliens!!  :?   For the record on my part I'll give you truth and make a closer jump from aliens as to what is "historical accuracy"  :idea :idea :idea  Funny now that video cameras are so much better that we don't have to watch aliens fly around in little spacships or big foot running around the woods. Fact is that Romans had heated floors long before Home depot, but I guess that will be up for debate too.....   :%

Welcome Dahoser. Don't think I've officially done that. This is a pretty fun place, and occasionally, people speak their minds.
Rest assured, I wasn't at all offended at what you said,
I was merely mocking Badger.

I do a lot of freelance videography, so I have respect for anyone taking the time to express themselves in that medium.
This was merely a response to Badger's 'Imonnatellyahowitis attitude'.

Personally, that movie evoked my interest.
It' s moving, beautifully done, and I watch it every now and again, inaccuracies and all....since I own a copy.

It was being sarcastic.
And as you can tell, I'm the subtle one on here LOL LOL

dahoser,

Here is another video using images from Braveheart.  It is historically inaccurate, but the music kicks @$$!

K. Just got back online, and just HAVE to comment on some of the things said about Mel Gibson's "lack of historical accuracy".  I have seen movie after movie about historical figures, and very few of them have ever been completely accurate.

My take on Mel's 2 very controversial movies is that he was after having you identify with the "saviors" he was featuring, and to actually feel the torments that each went through in order to accomplish their ends.  He did that so admirably that I had to stop each of the movies in order to catch my breath and go on, tears streaming down my face.

I have always been emotionally moved by The Uprising, and I salute you for the way you used Braveheart to give it visual depth.  Thank you for a very moving montage.

Judy,
Thank you very much for your support and I could not have writen a better post myself! When Badger posted my video it had around 3200 views and now has 9230 so some others have liked it to! I've only had 2 or 3 bad reviews. Most Braveheart video's on YT have been very popluar some with 2 or 3 hundred thousand views. I to loved the movie and consider it one of my top all time favorites! I think it is still one of the only video's with Alannach's The Upraising at all. Most of there music is of them live but maybe that is why because to make one with a montage of truth would take some very hard work to put together with pictures of what is truth if it would be good at all! All I know is that the song fit the movie and the scenes in it! I hate that I have maybe started off on the wrong foot here before I ever joined! Seems to be some very wonderful folks here and I'd like to get to know others better! Truth is most of the site seems to be about Albannach on the east coast with the subject matter of the treads and posts and I'm stuck out here in Colorado where they decided not to come again until next year.. :(  I'm rambling so enough   :shh Anyways, I'm happy you enjoyed the video and thank you for your kind words!!  :)  And I still thank Badger for posting it!

Nah, stick with your beliefs regardless whether or not people agree/disagree with them.  With all the strong, opinionate people that post here, controversy and disagreement is going to happen.

I don't think you got off on the wrong foot, Dahoser.  You made a wonderful contribution to the tribe of misfits, and got them ramblin', ravin' and rabble rousin', which is what this band of misfits loves to do, and does best.

Do have to correct you on one point, though.

Albannach didn't choose not to come to Colorado...they weren't invited this year...so email the Long's Peak Fesitval folks and complain.  I hear they're getting a LOT of that.  And they deserve it.  I have been going there for 5 years, and have NEVER before seen the music tent as full as it was last year...nor as loud with people loving what they were seeing and experiencing.

I haven't complained yet.  :roll :roll :roll I haven't cooled off enough to be diplomatic.  :evilmad :evilmad :evilmad

Here is my e-mail from April 4th... So I did write them and I got a reply from them. I also called and she told me that they were booked and in January it did show them as coming back on the fest's web site but she told me that it was Albannach that had a problem with dates. That could have been just her line because I was pissed off. But here is the e-mails and you will get the same answers I'm sure,

Due to conflicts with scheduling.  They have been asked to come back for the 2010 festival.. I am sorry I realize they are very popular and are sorry they will not be joining the festival this year.

Hello,
I am deeply disappointed that you have decided not to ask Albannach back this year!!! I read earlier in the year on the site that they were coming back, now they aren't. Can you please let me know why because I know they truly wanted to return? They are a big draw to the fest and they have a large fan base that brings people from all over. It's a shame that is for sure!!

Thanks,
Floyd Deal

I was nice on the e-mail or I wouldn't have gotten a reply! Someone on another post said that they were told that they only let bands come two times in a row so others can come so this will be Brothers last year too!
